They say that a person does not just go to Kailash; they are called. Visiting Mount Kailash is a lifelong aspiration for many Hindu devotees. If you have been dreaming of the moment to visit Kailash once in your lifetime, it's finally time to answer the call.
Mentioned in the Puranas as the holy abode of Lord Shiva, Mount Kailash remains one of the few mountains that hasn’t been climbed. Yet its significance and spiritual value remain unmatched.
To show reverence and faith to the almighty Lord Shiva, devotees participate in the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which is said to cleanse one from their sins. On this yatra, pilgrims not only get to see and make a parikrama around Kailash but also visit the equally significant Lake Mansarovar, believed to have been made from the mind of Brahma.
It takes more than just devotion to join the yatra; it requires careful planning and preparedness.
We have prepared this detailed guide, “Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from India,” for Indian pilgrims to prepare themselves for the yatra. It includes information from its facts to routes, packages, best time to visit, booking process, 2026 yatra dates, and other significant travel tips. Explore the full guide below!

What is Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a pilgrimage through the land of Tibet (China), known for its mesmerizing desert landscape.
Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar are the major highlights of the Yatra, which serves as a prominent location of cultural, spiritual and religious significance.

Popular among religions like Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Bons, the pilgrims have their own faith and beliefs for the mighty Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar.
The Hindus believe the mountain to be the abode of Lord Shiva and the Lake is believed to be made from the mind of Lord Brahma.
Likewise, the Buddhists consider the mountain as Mount Meru, which is believed to be the home of the Buddha Demchok, representing supreme bliss.
The Jains see it as a place where their first Tirthankara, Rishabhdev, attained liberation and the Bons consider it as a spiritual axis of the world.
The ultimate goal of this yatra is Kailash Parikrama or Kora, which means to circumambulate (go around) Mount Kailash for spiritual benefit and is believed to cleanse one's sins from their life.
The Kora is from Darchen to Darchen, which takes around 3 days. Considering that the pilgrims have to trek at an average altitude of 4500 m, it tests the pilgrims’ physical endurance and mental strength as well.
So, the Yatra is not only about reaching a sacred destination but also about purifying one's inner self, a pilgrimage that continues even after the mountains are no longer visible.

Journey from India to Kailash
For Indians participating in Kailash Yatra, there are two options they can follow: one is to participate in the Indian Government organized Kailash Tour, which has very few quotas and need not enter Nepal and the other is one of the privately organized tours by the Kailash operator, where one must definitely pass via Nepal.

For the ones opting for the latter, to reach Nepal, one needs to reach Kathmandu or Lucknow to start the Yatra via any border, as travel packages provided by the agencies start either from Kathmandu or Lucknow.
Reaching Nepal from India is easy, as they are border countries where one can travel either by flight or overland with no visa requirements for Indians. There are direct flight options from major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and others.
From Kathmandu
Once you reach Kathmandu, there are two options to continue the yatra, i.e., either via overland or heli. Each route follows its own scheduled itinerary. The overland route crosses the Kyirong border by drive, and the heli route crosses the Hilsa border by taking flights and heli.

This is a 14-day tour starting and ending in Kathmandu and is the longest among all options. The overland route is used here where the border is crossed through Rashuwagadhi. The slow-paced journey gives more time for both acclimatization and spiritual immersion. It is a perfect choice for those who want to have a complete and thorough pilgrimage experience.
This trip starts from Kathmandu, where flights from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and Simikot and further Heli ride to Hilsa are used to cut down the travel time. It provides a comfortable and quick way to complete the pilgrimage. The pilgrims can then devote their energy to spirituality rather than on physical aspects. Perfect for the ones with a time constraint.
Beginning at Lucknow, this travel plan also uses a flight from Nepalgunj to Simikot and a heli ride to Hilsa. It cuts down on long road trips and the comfort factor gets a boost.
The path is really good for the elderly pilgrims and those who are after convenience. This trip can be completed in 8 days, the shortest among other options. It is perfect for those who don't want to come to Kathmandu and can directly enter Nepal via Lucknow.
The trip has Kathmandu as the starting point and includes flight or helicopter transfer to the border and can make their exit through to Lucknow. The whole plan mixes comfort and efficiency quite nicely. It is suitable for those who want a hassle-free exit point.
No matter which route is chosen, the ultimate goal of the trip is to have a comfortable, safe, successful yatra.
Best Time to Visit Kailash Mansarovar
The timing of the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage lies mostly on the way you want to experience the whole journey. The period for pilgrimages usually starts in early May and continues until September; thus, there are various travel times according to the different weather and your personal preferences.

June and August are the most pleasant months in this aspect. The weather is nice, the air is clear, and the routes are open and easy to travel through. During these months pilgrims can completely enjoy the journey without the fear of harsh weather challenges.
The time period, particularly between June and August, sometimes interferes with travellers travel plans due to occasional rainfall and sudden snow.
Some travellers also prefer early September over other times, as the weather is usually stable while the pilgrim count gradually lessens, which provides a slower and more serene experience.
Also, a factor to consider while determining the best time is also the full moon dates. The region is crowded, especially during full moon time, due to religious factors. If you prefer more of the quieter time, choosing non full moon dates are better options.
Ultimately, the time to go depends on your priorities, be it pleasant weather, fewer crowds, or the atmosphere of a peak pilgrimage time. If you consider all the factors above to schedule your trip, you are bound to have a significant and very satisfying journey.

Kailash Mansarovar Travel Tips for Indians

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra as a journey that presents intense physical and mental challenges rather than just being a spiritual journey makes proper preparation a crucial part. Here are some essential travel tips pilgrims travelling from India must keep in mind:
Documents Required
Kailash Yatra requires crossing international borders where various documents are required to clear the border formalities. For travellers from India, they will need documents for the Nepal and Tibet side.
To enter Nepal, Indians can enter using a Voter ID or a Birth Certificate in the case of minors.
However, to enter China/Tibet, one must present a valid passport, a Chinese visa, and a travel permit for Tibet, commonly referred to as the Tibet Travel Permit, all at the same time. These papers are required for gaining entrance into Tibet as well as for travelling to the Kailash Mansarovar Region, as mandated by the Chinese regulations.

Acclimatization
The Kailash Mansarovar Region lies at an average elevation of 4500 m and pilgrims are required to drive and trek at this altitude while also crossing a high pass above 5600 m. If careless, altitude sickness is inevitable, where symptoms like headache, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite are seen among the travellers.
Which is why acclimatization is a significant part of the yatra that helps the pilgrims cope with the altitude. A night or two stay in the lower altitudes like Kyirong and Taklakot is kept to acclimatize for the higher altitude.
Packing List
You need to pack wisely to prepare yourself for high altitude areas, cold temperatures, and unpredictable weather. Because of drastic temperature changes, layering is very important in terms of clothes.
The list of thermal wear includes warm layers such as fleece or wool, insulated jackets, trekking pants, waterproof outer shells, gloves, woollen socks, caps, or neck warmers. In addition to sturdy waterproof trekking shoes with ankle support, a lighter pair of sandals or slippers is also recommended.
Besides, don’t forget to take additional essentials like personal medicines (must have doctor’s prescription), sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, a thermos, trekking poles, a torch, wet wipes, and energy snacks, as these will not only bring comfort but also safety during the trip.

Alongside the personal experiences, travellers highlight the care, organization and management of the team they have travelled with. Here’s what the pilgrims who traveled with us in 2024 and 2025 say about us.
Top Reviews from our 2024/2025 Groups
Anita Gupte - June 2024

“Just back from a dream trip with KailashYatra.Travel. It started with a warm traditional welcome at the airport, followed by personal support and care throughout the booking process and trip. The staff is excellent and went out of their way to make this difficult tour a breeze. Highly recommended! Looking forward to booking my Bhutan trip with them soon.”
Arturas Docius - September 2024

“Just finished my parikrama of Mt Kailash with Holidays to Nepal. That was one of the most memorable and satisfying trips I had, from the booking till the end. Kiran was prompt in replying to my queries. At the airport I was greeted in a traditional and polite manner. Sandesh supported and guided the whole group from Kathmandu to Mt Kailash and back. And thanks to Moley and other staff who looked after us all the way through.”
Jithin Subramaniam - July 2025

“Kiran & Team from Holidays to Nepal P. Ltd. Hats off to you for the small vibrant and active team who supported us from Day 1 till the final day of the trip's completion and checkout from the hotel where the agreed contract ended.
Professionalism, which is hardly displayed by the younger generation, should be learnt from your small company. I would say crisp and sharp at every angle. Clarity with no confusions. Simple and Humble. Ground level/Field level staff too did their best. I felt like my own family was standing in and around throughout the trip. I was associated with the co. for my Kailash Mansarovar Yathra 2025.
What's more, I would like to give 6/5 which means more than 100% they have given. Thanks a lot. I can simply push your name to anyone who likes to take your support for their travel plans ahead. "TRUST GLUED TO QUALITY" is the tagline which I like to attach to them. All the best. Hope to meet you all soon.”
Chandrashekhar Sathe - July 2025

Very well organised tour. Despite all kinds of obstacles, Mr Kiran from KailashYatra.Travel and his team overcame the issues and ensured the yatra went as per schedule. Even in Tibet, there were contingencies, which we overcame thanks to the Tibetan team.
Mr Kiran himself is a very responsible person, always available, thereby enabling the confidence of customers. Thoroughly satisfied with the agency KailashYatra.Travel and its team.
Conclusion
The reopening of the Kailash Mansarovar region for Indian pilgrims is like a blessing they have been long anticipating. After 5 years, the Yatra reopened in 2025 for the Indian pilgrims with a limited quota of 20,000 Indian travellers.
For the year 2026, due to the huge demand of Indian travellers, the chinese government as informed by our internal source, is planning to increase the entry quotas to accommodate more pilgrims.
As the dates for 2026 have already been released and all the information you need for the yatra is in this blog above. You can book now for the May-September fixed departures, and your journey to the "spiritual axis of the world" is all set to be made.
This is your lifetime journey with us where each step taken is supported by the knowledge and the compassion that this holy yatra deserves.
